How to Successfully Fail

March 12, 2019 by Alma Ohene-Opare No Comments

For the past 4 years of my professional career, I have been employed as a business consultant, my primary responsibility being, to help organizations large and small accomplish key business objectives through the implementation and adoption of a combination of software and business analytics methodologies.

These businesses looked to me in most instances as the expert in the room, there to help navigate them through the changes we all agreed would transform their operations and lead them to long-term success. I enjoyed every bit of my time as a consultant and learned many valuable lessons that shaped my understanding of success and what it takes to achieve it.

Let your Dream be Bigger than your Fears

March 12, 2019 by Alma Ohene-Opare No Comments

Growing up, I was known among my siblings as the different one. My parents probably told me that a thousand times; not always with a positive connotation, mind you. I was fiercely independent, frequently boisterous and eloquent enough to talk my way through most situations. The bottom line was that I knew what I wanted in life. In fact, I had dreamed of it for as long as I can remember and my quest for most of my growing years was to fill in the gap between where I was at the time and the realization of my dreams. Although there were many factors squarely out of my control, I was determined to do what was in my power to conjure the change I wanted in my life.

Never Adopt the Limitations of Others

On May 6th, 1954, something really incredible happened. A seemingly impossible feat was accomplished, and the whole world of sports was turned upside down. You may not know the significance of that date but its influence has almost certainly permeated your life in one way or another. It is the story of an incredible athlete, Roger Bannister, and his historic triumph over what was then called, “the Everest of athletic achievement”, the 4-minute mile.

Are you Parked at a Green Light? How Distraction Robs you of Opportunity.

March 12, 2019 by Alma Ohene-Opare No Comments

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine shared an experience that really got me thinking and evaluating my life. He was driving home from work and was stopped at a traffic light waiting to turn left. As his eyes drifted around, he saw in his rearview mirror, a large truck barrelling towards a sedan that was also stopped at an adjacent light. The truck driver did not appear to realize the vehicle was stationary and had to maneuver precariously at the last minute to avoid rear-ending the car.

My friend looked around frantically to see whether the truck driver had been suffering some kind of emergency and then turned to see if the driver of the sedan was alright. Everyone appeared to be alright. But something else caught his eye that explained exactly what had happened. The driver of the sedan was looking down at his cell phone. The light in front of him had turned green without him noticing. The truck driver saw a green light from afar and assumed the sedan was going to move. What was more shocking was the fact that the driver of the sedan had no idea what had just happened and how close he had been to the brink of disaster. He finally raised his head up and took off on his merry way.

The most Effective form of Persuasion is Action

March 12, 2019 by Alma Ohene-Opare No Comments

About 7 years ago, a nationally syndicated radio personality made a public request for volunteers to help build a website for a charity he intended to launch. An email address was provided to enable those interested to contact the show. As a budding web developer and a fan of the show, I immediately sent an email to register my interest. A few days later, I was invited to a conference call scheduled to discuss the needs and requirements of the website.

I was extremely excited that I had been chosen and without thinking too much, I began to mock up what the charity website could look like. I did not have any information about the specifications of the site, but I felt compelled to build something nonetheless, so I could more easily communicate my ideas about how the task could be accomplished.

I am Learning to Fly — Are you?

March 12, 2019 by Alma Ohene-Opare No Comments

On my way into work yesterday, I happened to look up as I swiped my key card. I saw an ordinary bird perched atop the building’s roof, without a care in the world. Thinking back, I don’t know why this less than impressive scene caught my attention. Like you, I have seen thousands of birds in my lifetime, perching in places of varying heights. After all, that’s what birds do. Nothing to see here, or so I thought.

This week, as I begin my journey to actionalyze (i.e. turn my dreams into reality), one goal I have set for myself is to seek daily to find meaning in the ordinary, light in the midst of uncertainty and edification in the seemingly mundane. But, what profound lesson could a bird perched atop the roof of an ordinary commercial building mean for my life? What could it mean for your life?

Mid-Life Crisis

How one solitary follicle of grey hair changed my life

My name is Alma Ohene-Opare. On Saturday, February 16, I will turn 35. So, technically, I am a millennial, albeit on the fringes of that classification. In a world where 26-year olds expect to remain on their parent’s insurance, 35 is still quite young, with the whole world still ahead of me, apparently. So, it is not surprising to me that millennials have earned, in many cases deservedly, the derision of society, and appear to have either embraced or succumbed to the increasingly popular pejorative, “snowflakes”. But for starters, I am not a snowflake. I went to boarding school at 13, graduated high school at 16 and have worked my butt off ever since. At 35, I have been married for 13 years and currently in the process of raising 4 beautiful kids. I have a loving wife, a great job, a beautiful home, wonderful career prospects and all the necessities of life. In fact, you could say, I am living the American dream. As an immigrant who came here in 2003 with barely anything, that nomenclature has a wonderful ring to it.
